LYTCHETT MINSTER & UPTON comprises two separate contrasting settlements adjacent to the north-western edge of Poole. The combined parish has a population of 7,846 with 6,191 electors, the large majority of which live in Upton.

For District Council elections the parish is split into two wards East and West, each having two seats.

Lytchett Minster is a small village of medieval origins, straddling the original route of the A35 Poole – Dorchester road, now by-passed. Apart from a small development of modern housing on its southern edge, the village has retained a predominantly rural character in spite of its close proximity to Poole. The village has two pubs, a secondary school and a rugby club.

Upton is an area of predominantly modern housing adjoining the Borough of Poole. It shares many of the characteristics of the urban area and has close transport links with the neighbouring town. It also lies adjacent to Upton Country House and Park, one of the Borough of Poole’s prime visitor assets. The settlement has a small parade of neighbourhood shops, a veterinary clinic and doctors surgery.
